Shiny, Dash or Flask have made the development of interactive, sophisticated apps incredibly simple. Data scientists and researchers can turn their analytical R or Python scripts into a web application in no time without going through the hassle of dealing with html, php, css.
This allows the quick development of all kind of useful tools that benefit the day to day work of practitioners and help generating valuable insights. It also offers new possibilities to academic researchers who can support their findings and make research results reproducible for everyone and even live.
However, the effective deployment of such web apps is still not a trivial task. Shiny as the most commonly used example is single threaded, meaning that it only performs one task at a time resulting in users blocking each other.
Once an app includes longer running tasks this can turn into a problem even with a very low number of users and qua definition makes it impossible to scale an app.
To make it work at scale, there is no way around acquiring quite a bit of knowledge about containerization and the management of a docker environment.
It took us quite a while to configure our servers in a way that finally allowed us to deploy our first small app in a scalable fashion.
Originally intended as a side tool to complete a research publication, this application ended up taking us much longer than the article itself; as such we decided to give it the support and future it deserves.
Since then, we have constantly developed our platform further and turned it into an indispensable part of our investment process and relationship management including applications for the generation of Single Stock Ideas, ESG Scorings, Portfolio Construction, and Investment Strategy Simulations.
